Ortodonico

Ortodonico (a hamlet of Montecorice) is a jewel: one of the most interesting towns of Cilento.

The town centre still preserves some historical structure, as the old Marquise’s palace and its elegant Medieval tower (emblem of the town), whose single-lancet window has got three refined small columns. The Amoresano palace, dating back to the1700’s, hosts the Museum of the peasant culture, in the old oil mill.

The earliest information about Ortodonico has been found in a buying and selling document of 1162 : a certain Mr. Marino sold a plot of land to the monastery of Cava De'Tirreni.
The ownership of the territory of Ortodonico had passed from barons to monastery to landlords, who obtained it at public auctions until the end of feudalism in 1806, when it became municipality. But, in 1937 a government ordinance (contested in vain) decided to move the town hall to Montecorice.
Michele and Francesco Paolo Del Mastro, from Ortodonico, were two volunteers on the “Expedition of the Thousand” led by Giuseppe Garibaldi.

We recommend you to visit also the church of Saint Antony Abbot and its little chapel of Saint Nicholas, of the 1600’s, and the church of Saint Mary of Grace, built up in 1700’s on the remains of a Basilian Coenobium.
