Lentiscosa

Lying on a hill overlooking the sea, hidden by olive trees, proud of its history and jealous of its traditions, there is Lentiscosa, a typical Cilento’s town, rich in artistic and natural beauties… to be rediscovered.
Its origin is no doubt dating back to the Basilian period of high middle ages , time of evangelization of our territory.
The town's name comes from the shrub Lentisco, Mastic (Pistacia lentiscus),
that grows spontaneously throughout the area. The name was given by the Basilian monks that in the 7th century AD began to colonize the hills of the Magna Greece coasts.
The old town centre develops around an authentic gem of the Basilian Architecture:
 the Chapel of Saint Mary of Martyres. 
The inside is entirely frescoed according to typical iconography of the Christian theology of the East: the Christ Pantocrator, the Holy Trinity, the Evangelists, the Church Fathers, the Mother of God, Queen of martyrs.

Saint Rosalia Shrine
Set on the hill between the Hill Spodicella and the cliffs, South of Lentiscosa. At first only a chapel, was erected in the year 1656 during the great plague that afflicted the whole Europe. According to Relationes ad S. Limina of prelates of Policastro, the construction was decided by all the population of Lentiscosa, thankful to the Saint for having stopped the plague.

The town celebrates Santa Rosalia with Holy art exhibitions, fireworks 
and great guest artists, on September 1 to 4: this explosion of religious festival is worth the experience.
The statue of the Saint, a beautiful Neapolitan sculpture of the 1700s, is carried in procession through all the town’s streets, arousing emotion and joy among the faithful. It seems that here faith, art and culture are strongly related, and that involves anyone in a rather simple way.
