Stella Cilento

Mount Stella, or Mount Cilento, with its 1200 m height, dominates all ancient Cilento, from Agropoli to Velia. Easily reachable, it is stud with towns, villages and country houses that offer breathtaking views on the Alento, on the plain of ancient Velia and on the coast.

One of these towns is Stella Cilento often starting point for bushwalking to the top of Monte Stella, equipped with picnic area.

Early information about the town dates back to 1200, but the place name is older, of 1038, referred to a deep valley. Until the second half of 1800 the name was Porcili, maybe from the Greek “pro” and “kyrios” meaning “opposite the lord” due to the fact that on Monte Stella was the residence of the gastald, which ruins are still visible in località "Castelluccio". The town was born when refugees from Torricelle (old village at the foot of Mount Stella) moved here. But the place name (porcili means pigsties) could derive from the main activity of Porcili: the breeding of black pigs, breed almost disappeared today, reared in the wild.

The economy of the town relies today on the production of extra virgin olive oil, figs and typical products of Cilento,  such as salami and goat cheese.
Striking the ancient square and the Church of San Nicola where there is an interesting marble bas-relief, dating from the 14th century, portraying Madonna della Stella (worshipped at a shrine atop Mount). Very beautiful also the Stations of the Cross painted on wood by local artist Anna Maria Chirico. The Festival of the Patron Saint, San Nicola, is held on the second Sunday of August and the fair of San Bernardino on 19 and 20 May.

The hamlet San Giovanni, of Langobard origin, was settled around 1225. The Ducal Palace of the Vassallo, "the Castle", dating back to the 17t century is worth a visit. The Festival of the Patron Saint, San Giovanni, takes place on 24 June and in August there is the Festival called "party at the Castle".

Amalafede (originally Bonafida, meaning good land), is believed to be a result of the depopulation of various villages of the Valley, after the plague of 1348.

The village of Guarrazzano was a Langobard castle.
Around the castle developed the first inhabited nucleus. Early news about the hamlet dates back to 1009.
Its few inhabitants are farmers, especially dedicated to the cultivation of olive trees.

The Festival of San Pietro is on 29 June and Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on the second Sunday of September. The feast of free-range chicken and sausage takes place in August.

Droro is the home of the master basket weavers. Even today you can admire this art born in the 1950s, thanks to the passion of craftsmen.
