Palinuro

Palinuro is a seaside resort, famous throughout Italy since the 60 's. Capo Palinuro, a promontory jutting out into the sea, is one of the most beautiful stretches of coast of the entire Campania, with its rocks falling sheer into the sea.

Among the rocks, over which stands the lighthouse of Capo Palinuro, nest many species of birds and grow plants and flowers typical of the Mediterranean climate.

But the real treasure of Capo Palinuro is below sea level: 32 caves, a paradise for divers. The most important are the Blue Grotto, so named for the spectacular play of light on the water, Silver Grotto and Sulphureous Grotto. For those who do not practice diving, boat tours leave from the port of Palinuro. Enjoy a breathtaking experience!

The enchanting grottoes of Capo Palinuro, about 130,000 years ago (Riss glacial period), were surrounded by a completely different landscape: dense woods and large clearings for hundreds of meters from the current coastline; fauna was predominantly composed of mountain goats, deer, horses, bears and cave lions, whereas the caves were shelter for Homo erectus. Everything is documented by fossil discoveries, particularly in the famous Cove of the bones where, embedded in the rock, the bones of such an unbelievable zoo can be admired. Also the numerous remains of obsidian tools, found in fossil Dune, suggest that Palinuro was a commercial stop on the route from Aeolian Islands, where natural glass came from.

The stretch of road leading from Palinuro to Marina di Camerota (in depth) offers a unique landscape known as "Beach of Mingardo": several kilometres from Capo Palinuro towards the famous Natural Arch and the mouth of the Mingardo and through an enchanting beach sets among crystal-clear water, a pine forest, rocks, caves and arches.

Antiquarium of Ficocella
Sets on a promontory overlooking the sea, the small Antiquarium exhibits furnishings dating back 6000 years ago, the remains of an ancient prehistoric settlement and grave goods of a necropolis (Ionic tradition and Attica ceramic).
