Set on the top of a hill, the village overlooks the Alento valley and offers a view of the coast. The castle, built up during the 13th century, dominates the ancient village characterized by narrow streets.
The village developed around the castle around the year 1000, after the fall of Castle of Bruca: the inhabitants, who had deserted it, have found shelter inland, into a Norman fortress that has grown wider as new people arrived. This village was given the name of “Castelnuovo” meaning “New castle”. In 1860 villagers definitively abandoned it, after a earthquake occurred and destroyed it. Current owners have renovated it but they don’t allow tours of the Castle interior.
