PONOR OF VALLIVONA
Affondatore of Vallivona is on the Southern slope of the Cervati at an altitude of 1100 m above the sea level. It is a trace of Quaternary glaciations later changed to karstic depression (from L’APPENNINO MERIDIONALE 1991). It has been a cave of crossing which collected high altitude’s waters that flowed on the Miocene’s flysh and came to the surface in Varco la Peta and Montemenzano. This waterway was the high section of the River Bussento. During 1970s were built a dam, to bar the entrance of the cave, and an artificial tunnel to drain the waters. Currently, the entrance to the portal (20 m. high and surmounted by a wall of approximately 60 m) can be reached through the artificial tunnel, 200 m long.
The main character of this excursion is water. When its force shapes the limestone rocks and its “voice” resonates in the Gorges, the landscape is transformed, enriched with new wonders and charm. The trails climbing the Inferno Valley up to the source of the Bussento, the tunnels carved into the rock, and "mouth" of a huge sinkhole are impressive example of what nature can create. The water shaped a crater (maximum height 100 meters) whose interior walls are covered with hygrophilous vegetation: an oasis nestled between the steep limestone cliffs, with a small waterfall and a pond fed by rainwater.
Organized hiking tour
Time: 6 hours
Level: Moderate
Total incline: 700 m
Tour starts from Rofrano town.
The trail starts from the fountain near Ponte Inferno at an altitude of 550 m. It continues along a dirt track which runs alongside the River Bussento. After about 1 km the path climbs through a Hop Hornbeam wood (Ostrya carpinifolia). After about 1.5 hours, climb gives a stop and the trail allows you to admire the sheer cliffs on the bed of the Bussento. During hiking tour you can see, in addition to many deciduous plants, also European yews (Taxus baccata). You will reach the source of the Bussento flowing from a cave that has been closed by works that have allowed the collection of the spring waters for the construction of an aqueduct (water supply).
The climb up continues along a path and then a track.
The track ends at the entrance of a tunnel (1070 m). The 500 m long tunnel can be crossed with the aid of flashlights. Once inside the sinkhole you have the perception of its greatness; it has elliptical shape and is a place of high naturalistic value, due to the plant environment that lies at its core. The grey limestone rock has been carved by the stream that receives the waters of the entire Vallivona Valley. The return journey takes place using the same path.
