In a document of 1110 it was referred to Rocca Cilento for the first time: the record was about the decision of Guglielmo the 1st Sanseverino to move the seat of the Barony of Cilento from the fortress, set on top of Mount Stella, to Rocca. The “fortress” may refers to the Castellum Cilenti (Cilento’s castle), built on the ruins of Petilia, ancient Lucan capital city, but there are no evidence for its existence.
Earlier information regarding the ancient village has been found in documents (mentioned by Ebner) dating back to the period between 963 and 994. In any case Rocca Cilento had been a Langobard Actus (county) before being a Sanseverino’s ownership.
