Sito web: http://petina.asmenet.it According to official documents Petina’s origin dates back to the year 1000. It has been Autonomous University until it became a commune. Two ancient documents about Petina are kept in the monastery Badia of Cava (it contains rich archives of public and private documents, which date back to the 8th century) and in the Montevergine Abbey. A curiosity: the name was “Abetina” that means “rich in fir trees” (fir tree= abete).
The old water mill
You can visit the old water mill located downstream. It is a private property built up at the beginning of the 1900’s. On the left side a sequence of arches marks a terrace.
The Town Hall, ex Monaci Palace
The Town hall has moved in ex Monaci Palace, in the town square and near the parish church. The majestic palace was bought by local administration in 1952. On the top of the palace there is a beautiful clock tower.
Fontana vecchia – the old fountain
Built up at the beginning of the 1900’s , it was the public washing place. The fresh and crystalline water flows from one of the springs of the Alburni. The church of Saint Nicholas is interesting from an artistic point of view: the stone carved portal brings the inscription of the year “1510”
The monastery of Sant’Onofrio,
dating back to the 12th century, is the most ancient monument of Petina. Though today is a neglected building, in the past it has been a reference point for the surroundings; besides, it is the place where young Benedictine S.Donato da Ripacandida (venerated in Auletta) grew up and became a saint.
Summer in square
Summer entertainment take place during August. On August the 15th the typical course “pasta e fagioli” to eat in the town square during the traditional festival.
