Campora is in the middle of Cilento, 15 km North from Vallo della Lucania, in the Cilento National Park. The East side of the territory is included in the forest area of Pruno.
Campora’s territory offers attractive sceneries for hikers and trekkers.
The town, set on a hill that is a natural terrace overlooking the Torno stream, is surrounded by wonderful forests in a landscape characterized by singular, white-pink colored rocks. The place name comes from the Latin word “campus “meaning both ”plain” and “field”.
Campora boasts the largest forest in the province of Salerno.
Among the others there are the Montagna forest where Quercus cerris (Turkey oak) outnumbers other species; the chestnut (Castanea sativa) and alder (genus Alnus) Mancine forest and the Tempa Piana, a pine (genus Pinus) forest. Many animals live in these forests, such as wild boars, foxes and various species of birds.
The territory is ideal for mushroom hunters, because of the great variety of Fungi the forests offers, among which Boletus, Caesar’s Mushroom (Amanita caesarea), Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius), Parasol Mushroom (Macrolepiota procera) .
The most important watercourses flowing in the area of Campora are the Trenico stream (affluent of the Calore) and the Torno stream. Along the riverbanks you can admire a wonderful waterfall and the remains of old watermills.
A lot of itineraries: interesting is the hiking trail that, through the Torno’s gorges arrives at the Ternico stream. We suggest you “Ponte dello Scalone” trail.
