Camerota

The Foundation of Camerota is traced back to the period between the 8th and 7th centuries BC, when in Italy and South Pacific was spreading the Greek colonization, and like any city that was part of the Magna Greece, Camerota is related to a legend: that of Palinuro and Kamaratòn.

Regarding the name of the city, it relies on the ancient Greek: "Kamarotòs", meaning "crooked", "done", and may derive from the presence of numerous natural caves in the area, as the unique architecture that characterizes the houses of Camerota, in arch form.

HISTORICAL NOTES
The ancient Citadel began to take shape in the 535-553, developing around a fortified castle when in the course of the Gothic-Byzantine war the area became home to many refugees. To mark the history of Camerota is also the arrival of the Saracens in the 868 and 915. But we must wait for the first 1079 historical source city official when Alfano, Archbishop of Salerno, assegò to the new Bishop of Policastro jurisdiction on it and other lands.

Since then they have more news about the city, which suffered the influence of many dominations that alternated: Normans, Arabs, Swabians who alternated then Angevin, Aragonese and finally the Bourbon dynasty, which ended with the unification of Italy.

Art and architecture
Lovers of art and architecture will not be disappointed: the territory of Camerota packs a cultural and artistic heritage rather rich, especially evident in the numerous religious architectural values. Still visible, in the Castle are the ruins of the Castle, built by the Marchesale prior to 9th-10th century a.d. The target of Suso, the only one left of the three gates that allow access to the medieval village.

The Church of San Gennaro with its precious baroque stuccos, the Church of San Nicola di Bari, whose interior cherishes a re-enactment of the ' 700 napoletano and a viennese art, the Church of St. Daniel the Prophet, "raised" by the Greeks and transformed subsequently by locals in place of Christian worship. Finally the Capuchin Convent with the Church in two naves which are a polyptych of the ' 700 with inlays of Sorrento and the canvas depicting s. Maria degli Angeli.
