Trentinara, known as “the terrace of Cilento”, is an ancient medieval village nestled on the top of Cantenna cliff at 606 m above the sea level, between sky and sea. It is a privileged location with wonderful landscapes, going from the Amalfi coast and Capri to Punta Licosa and the Sacred Mount (Mount Gelbison), and unforgettable sunsets.
Set in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, it is surrounded(North and East) by two mountains: Difesa Soprana (1082 m) and Mount Vesole (1210 m) offering breathtaking scenery combined with unspoiled nature.
THE HISTORIC CENTRE
The town center of Trentinara is the result of the evolution and the cultural sedimentation started in the 9th century A.D. The village had originally two gates: East Porta Soprana, and North Porta Sottana.
The intricate maze of streets and alleys reflects the medieval urban structure. A part of the historic centre preserves the antique look with cobbled streets and silent stone hoses adorned by outstanding portals dating from the 18th and 19th century and made with local stone that testify to the presence of expert sculptors. We recommend you to visit the three panoramic little squares nicknamed “terraces of Cilento”, Preta ‘ncatenata, the rural church of Our Lady of Loreto, the Church of the Assumption, St. Nicholas Church, in Romanesque style, dating back to the 11th century, the Church of the Rosary renovated in 1747 and enriched with some paintings, including an altarpiece of the school of Francesco Solimena.
Waterfall on the river Solofrone (Tre Monti Trail)
A challenging path that gives you continuous emotions. Going along the river you will immediately see the remains of a mill proudly overlooking the calm water. Old stone bridges and dry-stone walls witness to the work of shepherds and farmers. Following the trail marked out by cattle, rocky outcrops and junipers accompany you until the end of the plateau where suddenly the Earth turns into a cliff offering a simply breathtaking panorama:
the mountain, the cliff Cantenna (on top of which stands Trentinara) and the majestic sea. Along the rocky face you get to preta spaccata, wonderful artwork of Nature, and then to the canyon.
You can hear the noise of the waterfall that only few steps off will open to your eyes: a jump of more than twenty metres of swirling water sliding in the grooves carved into the stone and, then, gently flowing to the plain of Paestum.
Sentiero degli Sposi (Bride and Groom trail)
From piazzetta to the Benedictine monastery (in the municipality of Giungano) dating from the 12th century, going through forests of Juniper and Oak with beautiful views of the Sele Plain below.
Monte Soprano (1086 m)
Among maples, holm oak and oak trees, the main attraction, besides the beautiful panoramic spots, is the sinkhole of Jurmanito. Here the waters of the stream Salso flow into the rock and then come to the surface, rich in calcium carbonate, at the sources of Capodifiume, near Capaccio.
Monte Vesole (1210 m)
The charming path leading to the Summit through the forests of alders, maples and beech trees that allow only a glimpse of what is the show from the top: Trentinara, Monte Sottano, the plain of Paestum, the Amalfi coast and Capri, the Calore Valley , the Alburni peaks and the Cervati Massif. Plateau Le due Nevere is absolutely worth visiting: an equipped area where you can admire two deep ancient pits used as icehouses: filled with snow and then covered with plants in order to preserve the snow until summer.
