Sito web: http://www.comune.laurino.sa.it Sinkhole of Vesalo
It is a limestone cave, formed by a double pit of 43 and 100 meters; at the bottom a tunnel cave in which pour the waters of the stream Silenzi opens: a paradise to explore. The area is about 1,000 m above sea level, on the border between the municipalities of Valle dell'Angelo and Laurino. The area is suitable for walks in the wood and picnics, perfect for an outdoor day.
The sinkhole of Vesalo is one of the most famous karst phenomena in Europe, the largest in the Apennine complex Alburni-Cervati.
A sinkhole is a depression or hole in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer; some are caused by karst processes, for example the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks.
The wide chasm consists of a series of pits, waterfalls and lakes.
The high humidity and soil features have allowed the development of particular forms of flora and fauna.
Only speleologists can visit most of these caves.
