The Oasis is the most important preservation project of WWF Italy and represents a concrete intervention in defence of natural territory and biodiversity. Born in 1985, it is 607 hectare large. It is a wildlife protection oasis, managed with the municipality of Morigerati.
The town develops atop a cliff overlooking the WWF oasis of the Bussento Grotto.
Many naturalistic trails and picnic area for visitors.
It offers guided visits, workshops, green weeks. It is ideal to spend a day walking in the nature.
The WWF set up several nature paths, so that everyone can appreciate and enjoy the natural environment in which they walk, offering real stimuli. The path leads to the sinkhole of the Bussento up to the mouth of the grotto:
the Bussento River, which originates from the core of Cilento, the lower slopes of Mount Cervati (1898 m), goes down into the sinkhole approximately at an altitude of 233 meters.
In the fresh and clear waters of the river live brown trout, crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes), crab (Potamon fluviatile) and traces of the otter (Lutra lutra) have been found. In the Holm oak (Quercus ilex) wood can be found traces of Porcupine, Wild cat and Wolf.
Among the birds of prey you can see Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), Kestrel (Falco tinniculus), Black kite (Milvus migrans), Red kite (Milvus milvus) and Raven(Corvus corax).
The entrance to the cave is really spectacular and leads to a staircase carved in limestone and then to a wooden bridge that cross the river. The entrance is illuminated by sunlight. Torches are distributed at the entrance of the OASIS.
Also other rivers have designed this landscape with canyons and waterfalls. The Rio Casaletto (or Bussentino), a tributary of the Bussento, left a deep and spectacular gorge between Casaletto Spartano, Tortorella and Morigerati. The torrent is located upstream from the medieval town of Casaletto Spartano, located among chestnut, pine forests and rocky mountains, in a typical mountain landscape. In the old town centre there are typical stone houses and cobbled streets. On the way to the hamlet Battaglia the wonderful waterfall Capelli di Venere (Venus’ hair)of the Rio Casaletto, where we find a beautiful equipped area next to an old mill complex.
Beyond the deep canyon you can see the town of Tortorella, from which you can enjoy a very special panorama, going from the Lucan Apennine to the Gulf of Policastro.
