Laurino

Perched on an outcrop, Laurino is one of the most populated, fascinating and rich in history municipalities of the Calore Valley.

The entire town is a unique mixture of exotic atmosphere and tradition that stirs
deep emotions: West, looking at the horizon, you can see the Paestum coast;  East you can see the thrilling Cavallo overhang; raising the gaze towards the hill, you can admire the majesty of the Langobard Castle, which appears to be hanging between sky and earth.

The hill of Mount Cavallo, on which is situated the town, slopes gently down toward the Valley but, on the opposite side, it overhangs the cliff, covered by dense vegetation rich in game. The high peaks determined the formation of deep gorges from which pour copious water sources that flow into the Calore River, where trout (Salmotrutta fario) abounds.
After some studies of the Department of Cultural Heritage and Activity, numerous archaeological finds were found: an important contribution to discover the ancient territory’s look which, over the past 50 years has undergone
numerous renovations that permanently changed the urban and architectural appearance. Besides, they have in part cancelled the look of medieval town:  the old narrow streets, with stone steps, are partly disappeared.
However, the charm of the “old town” remains, thanks to the numerous events, shows and pageants.
The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, dating back to the year 1000 and rebuilt in 1776 in Roman-Baroque style, dominated on all ecclesiastical institutions, in fact numerous synods was celebrated here (the most important was that on December 12th, 13th and  14th in 1649, under Monsignor Tommaso Carafa).
This church has been for centuries Centre of Christendom of the vast state of Laurino.
