The town’s origins are unknown. The hamlet was referred the first time to under the name of Ruticinum (in locum Ruticini), in a document dated 954 about the "Translatio" (“to move from one place to another”) of the remains of the body of the Apostle Matthew from Duoflumina (Casalvelino) to Caputaquis (Capaccio) and then to Salerno. The town is set on the crest of a hill beneath the ancient castle of Rocca Cilento, from where you can admire Sacro Monte of Novi Velia. From the highest part of the town, San Rocco, you can see the Alento dam.
Wonderful is the geographical position of this ancient town from where you can easily reach the nearby centres, rich in culture, art and history: Rocca Cilento, Lustra with the convent of San Francesco, Vatolla (the town of Giambattista Vico), Torchiara and Copersito, Laureana with the seat of the Comunità Montana, Agropoli, Paestum and Velia and many hamlets overlooking those valleys praised by Enzio Cetrangolo.
The Angel’s flight
It is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque attractions, especially for children, because it instils in their hearts the most indelible memory of a holy event: that’s probably why people of Rutino origin return during the days of the Angel‘s flight festival. Also many foreigners, who saw the religious drama when they were children, now feel the nostalgia to live through this experience again. The “Angel” is chosen during auditions: a young boy, not over 40 kg in weight, whose voice must be quite acute and melodious. Each Angel who flew over Rutino says he’s never felt any fear.
