Stio

It was built in the 10th century around the chapel of Saint Mary of the Cross. The old town is characterized by ancient stone portals, alleys, courtyards and arches. It is possible to visit the Church of Saints Peter and Paul which houses a statue of Saint Paschal by Domenico Di Venuta, a Neapolitan sculptor.

THE CHURCH OF SAN PASQUALE:
It was the year 1726 when they begin to worship Saint Pascal whom was dedicated an Altar in the ancient Church of St. Peter and Paul. After prodigious events, happened in the following years, they decided that Saint Paschal would be protector of the town and they ordered a wooden statue to the Neapolitan sculptor Domenico Di Venuta. Until 1930 an ancient tradition (typical of the peasant culture) has been preserved: people offered the priest a quantity of corn equal to the weight of the smallest child who wore Franciscan habit, and even special was the way of weighing: they used a balance scale with the baby on one side and the grain on the other side.

Stio also stands for artisan productions, among others those of wooden musical instruments.  There are many gastronomic events in Stio, first of all the "Ciccimmaretati" Festival which is held annually. "Ciccimmaretati" (meaning “married legumes”) is a delicious vegetable soup born when peasants, because of the lack of agricultural products, "married in the pot" the legumes left over.

Then there is the Chestnut Festival (typical hills’ product), during which tourists can taste original dishes made using chestnuts. In winter, another original event takes place: Festival of the Bean Regina, born with the aim of making known the properties of one of the most important products of Cilento.
